Now the British weather is finally getting warmer and the summer nights are brighter getting out into some greenery after work and on the weekends is all we want to do, right? So, what better time to host a bohemian garden party and decorate your backyard to celebrate this glorious summer. Whether it’s someone’s birthday or you just don’t want the hassle of going to the busy park or smoking up your garden with a barbeque, a quiet, chilled bohemian garden party is the perfect way to spend your summer. So, here’s how I hosted a boho / hippie birthday party for 8 people…

SHOP PARTY ESSENTIALS:
STEP 1: CLEAN, CLEAR AND DRESS THE SETTING
(Before clearing up the garden space)
If you’re hosting the party in your back garden, you may want to kill any weeds and prune any overgrown greenery to maintain your the setting for your party.
After clearing the space, it’s time to dress your setting by hanging up bunting, tassels and any more hanging decorations such as lights or flowers.
STEP 2: LAY DOWN THE TAPESTRIES
If you already have rugs and quilts that you think would be suitable for the theme of the party feel free to lay them down. I bought these beautiful Indian handmade tapestries from Jaipur Art Factory and I only needed 2 of them to cover the area that seated 6-8 guests.
TIP: Before you lay down the tapestry you may want to buy a disposable plastic sheet to place under the tapestry to prevent it from getting any stains from the garden.
STEP 3: SET UP YOUR TABLES
Since this bohemian party involves sitting on rugs and cushions a picnic table or a table with short legs would be perfect but if you don’t have any of these a long table with the legs folded in would still be suitable. Crates covered with table clothes and stacked on top of each other can also complement the bohemian theme.
STEP 4: DRESS THE TABLE
This is where you can get really creative! Firstly, place a few boldly-coloured table cloths over the table to emphasise the colours in the tapestries. Lastly, place the rustic Hessian table runner in the centre.
Then, dress the table with the flowers in milk bottles wrapped with string and feathers, decorative glassware, cutlery and plates, if desired. Then, add any extra details such as lanterns, terrariums, fake butterflies, feathers and tealight candles.
After adding the name places for your guests you can also leave them sweet treats and a little bit of light entertainment such as temporary tattoos or henna.
TIP: To save space on the main table you may want to have a small coffee table for drinks and extras then plate your food indoors to save the table space for any decorations.
STEP 5: DECORATE THE REST OF THE SPACE
After adding the cushions to the seating places I added extra decorations such as candle-lit lanterns and a teepee at the head of the table for the host or birthday girl. These extra details are sometimes what make the most memorable party.
STEP 6: MAKE THE ENTRANCE UNFORGETTABLE
Before your guests arrive, set the scene by burning an incense or lighting the candles and dress up in a patterned frock. To enhance the bohemian theme you may want to play a bohemian playlist to keep the mood alive throughout your whole dinner party. Check out the playlist I created for the boho party I hosted on Spotify:
